CT: Will there be some proprietary filters in StarOffice that you won't
find in OpenOffice?
Rogers: The kinds of things that we cannot deliver to OpenOffice.org are
file filters, fonts, some linguistic technology, and the database
component, which is a third-party deal we have with Adabas. Those are the
differences, but largely the community comes in and says "OK, if we can't
have the same thing that's in StarOffice, we'll do something different." So
the community is working on a WordPerfect filter, it is throwing fonts in
there, and they have developed or found open source thesauri.

CT: Sun just announced that it will begin charging for StarOffice with
version 6, while maintaining a no-charge download for the
community-developed OpenOffice 6 upon which it is based. Can you give us
some of the reasoning behind this decision?

Comme on dit, read my lips: "no-charge download for the community-developed
Sun Microsystems Inc.'s StarOffice 6.0 will come with enhanced features and
added support, but at a price, as Sun aims to attract a wider audience,
such as businesses, towards the office-productivity software suite. A less
sophisticated version of the product will still be available for free
download from OpenOffice.org, the open-source community sponsored by Sun,
the company announced Tuesday.

Vive Slackware!
