Stallman on Open source vs Free software

RMS: Our community has grown much the way many third-world
cities have grown: too fast, and without incorporating the
newcomers into civic affairs.

Today the Open Source Movement attracts many users to the
GNU/Linux system, citing only practical advantages such as
power, reliability, and inexpensiveness. That movement
studiously avoids mentioning idealistic concepts such as freedom
and community, and as a result most of the newcomers have no
idea that you can think of free software in those terms.

The result is that their support for free software has shallow,
weak roots. If they chose free software for practical
convenience, they are likely to switch back to non-free software
whenever it offers greater practical convenience.

To create firmly rooted support, the kind that will not be torn
out by a storm, the Free Software Movement needs to teach these
newcomers about the issues of freedom and community. Nobody will
fight with determination for mere convenience, but people will
fight for their freedom.

Unfortunately, the Free Software Movement is much smaller than
the Open Source Movement, and we reach only a fraction of the
community. The Free Software Movement needs your help in doing
this. The simplest way you can help is to use the term "free
software" rather than "open source".
