Mandrake Linux problems

I tried setting-up Mandrake 8.0 (download version supplied on disk) on an HP 6330 (AMK6-2) with 48 Megabytes of RAM.

I am usually using Windows 98 and am not connected to the Internet with this machine.

I partitioned the drive with 1.5 GBytes for Mandrake 8.0, set-up the software and started using it with the graphics interface. It all went very smoothly and I expected to start learning  Linux in March 2002.

After up grading the memory to 156 MBytes and adding an Iomega drive  in February 2002 Linux stopped working.  (Iomega was not supported under version 8.0)

I then did something which I learned not do later. I deleted the partition thinking that would eliminate Linux. It did but not the dual boot menu which continued to be present. I have used the machine like this over the past nine months by just selecting Windows 98 from the menu.

I recently tried upgrading to Mandrake 9 but found nothing happened when I tried installing it using a 3 CD set from the CD drive.

I used the Linux for Windows version. It just jammed on start up and all I get now is the first two letters of Linux and then the system hangs.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to recover a drive or install Mandrake 9 on a this machine ?
